Five Budget Friendly Eating Ideas in Italy || EATALY Vol. 1

Ciao! Over the past two weeks, I’ve been on a trip to Italy. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to share everything I did with you guys! With Italy being one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, it means that you will be ‘graced’ with high hotel prices, expensive mediocre food and crowds (quite depressing in’t). That being said, with the help of hostel hosts, I have put together a list of 5 budget-friendly meal ideas that might help you plan for your trip to Italy. Check them out:

1. Aperitivo

A great creation for budget travellers.
Aperitivo is basically like happy hour. You basically pay the price of a drink (alcoholic or nonalcoholic) and you get all-you-can-eat finger food and snacks. It’s so called ‘finger food’ but it ain’t your pretzel stick or chips and salsa, it’s meatballs, roasted veggie couscous, pizza and pasta! Hit up restaurants from 6pm-9pm and keep a look out for the word ‘Aperitivo’ displayed outside. For a buffet and a drink that cost 8 - 12 euros! What more can you ask for?

2. Set dinners

Another budget-friendly dinner option are dinner sets offered at restaurants, which (generally) include an appetiser (pasta or antipasti), a main dish and a dessert or drink. Look around for these restaurants, they normally cost from 15-23 euros, which is VERY reasonable considering a pasta dish itself costs almost 15 euros.
I randomly walked into a restaurant that offered set dinners for 17.5 euros (which I later found out was a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant). Portions were the same as the a la carte menu (I came out a couple pounds heavier). Would definitely recommend this if you are looking to have a full meal.

3. Lunches

Yet ANOTHER option if you’re like me and wants to experience the food but also save yourself some more cash. Try to have your biggest meal, or fancy meal during lunch. The menu normally doesn’t change but main dishes may come with drinks, saving the buck from drinks.

4. Sandwich Stop

Opt for a on-the-go meal and stop by a ‘Salumeria/Norcineria’ (word for places that sell deli meats) and grab urself a sandwich. They are dirt cheap (around 2.5-5 euros) and humungous, you won’t need to worry about not being filled up. You can also ask to have it heated up (double the amazing-ness, trust me)

5. Picnicking
If you like being outdoors in the sun or on a park bench under the oaks. This would be a great meal option for you. Head up a local market and pick up fresh toms, basil, prosciutto (and maybe some bubbly), and enjoy a meal under the Italian sun.

Hope these will help you during your trip!

I am really excited to share more about EATALY (eating through Italy), stay tuned for posts over the weekend!

Hope you are well.

Love,

Vivien
